Summary of Position

The primary purpose of the Welder/General Operative is to carry out welding and metal burning operations to for the purposes of repairing containers in our Inland Depot in Dublin. The Welder/General Operative is responsible for ensuring repairs are conducted to a high level and in a timely manner. Though not in the immediate plans of the business, the role may develop into a container conversion operative position, turning shipping containers into modular homes or offices. The Welder/General Operative is also responsible for supporting other minor activities across the Depot and, on occasion, DSG’s terminal in Dublin Port. The job is based both indoors and outdoors, with the majority of repairs conducted in a specialised workshop area.

 

Responsibilities / Principal Duties

·         To tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.

·         To cut work pieces, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.

·         To melt lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.

·         To install or repair equipment, such as lead pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings.

·         To inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometre, calliper, and precision measuring instruments.

·         To remove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.

·         To heat, form, and dress metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.

·         To analyse engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.

·         To develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.

·         To determine required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.

·         To assist with the handling of containers as dictated by the Company’s customer’s requirements.

·         To operate the Company’s equipment, plant and machinery, which may include forklifts and empty handlers, in a proper, safe and efficient manner in accordance with the Company’s procedures and policies.

·         To assist with the general housekeeping/cleaning of Company equipment and work areas.

·         To assist with the general workload of the repairs department.

·      To assist the repairs teams as required in maintaining the Company’s equipment and vehicles in a good working order and condition in accordance with the Company’s procedures and policies.

·         Any other duties the management may from time to time deem necessary and reasonably require, including upskilling to cover other positions in the depot as required

Location

The primary place of work for this position will be at our depot in the Dublin Inland Port, St Margaret’s, Co Dublin.

 

Working Hours

Working hours will be 0600-1800 hrs Monday to Friday over a 4-day cycle. 12-hour shifts. (Subject to change. To be confirmed nearer the start date)
