Job Title:         SHIP AGENT

Summary of Position

The Ship Agent acts as the representative of the ship owner in port and serves as the primary point of contact for vessels scheduled to arrive. The role involves organising, overseeing, and coordinating all aspects of a vessel’s port call, from arranging berths and planning cargo operations prior to arrival through to finalising accounts and documentation after departure. The Ship Agent works closely with vessels, port authorities, terminal operators, and service providers to ensure the efficient and compliant turnaround of each port call.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all aspects of vessel port calls from pre-arrival through to departure.

  • Liaise with ship masters, ship owners, cargo receivers, port authorities, and terminal operators.

  • Arrange port services including pilots, tugs, mooring, and stevedores.

  • Prepare and submit required documentation to customs, immigration, and port authorities.

  • Attend vessels on arrival and departure when required.

  • Monitor cargo operations and ensure the timely turnaround of vessels.

  • Maintain accurate operational records and prepare port call reports.

  • Handle crew changes, medical assistance, and logistical arrangements as necessary.

  • Ensure compliance with local regulations, safety standards, and company procedures.

  • Manage cost control and prepare disbursement accounts for port calls.

  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of cargo operations on board vessels when required, including liaising with stevedores and vessel crew to ensure the safe and efficient handling of cargo.

Working Hours

Normal working hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. However, due to the nature of port operations, the role also requires participation in an out-of-hours rota to support occasional early mornings, late evenings, and weekend vessel operations.

The successful candidate will join a team where out-of-hours coverage is provided on a rota basis.


Essential Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent education standard required.

  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.

  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to work under pressure.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Computer literate, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and operational reporting systems.

  • Full clean driving licence and willingness to attend vessels outside normal working hours when required.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience in ship agency, maritime logistics, or port operations is desirable but not essential.
