Summary of Position

The primary purpose of the Metal Fabricator/Welder is to carry out fabrication/welding and metal burning operations to Company equipment/plant/machinery, ship’s equipment/plant/machinery and other 3rd party equipment/plant/machinery. The Metal Fabricator/Welder is responsible for assisting other employees with their work to repair and maintain Company equipment/plant/machinery and maintaining accurate job cards for the Maintenance Manager. The Metal Fabricator/Welder is also responsible for supporting on-ship and ship's side operations and organising and supervising various jobs. The job is based both indoors and outdoors.


Responsibilities / Principal Duties

·         To lay out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, callipers, and ruler.

·         To tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.

·         To cut work pieces, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.

·         To melt lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.

·         To install or repair equipment, such as pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings.

·         To inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometre, calliper, and precision measuring instruments.

·         To removes rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.

·         To heat, form, and dress metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.

·         To analyse engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.

·         To develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.

·         To determine required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.

·         To assist with the mooring and unmooring of vessels and ensure mooring/unmooring operations are carried out, safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the Company’s procedures and policies.

·         To assist with the handling of cargo as dictated by the Company’s customer’s requirements.

·         To operate the Company’s equipment, plant and machinery, in a proper, safe and efficient manner in accordance with the Company’s procedures and policies.

·         To act as a Competent Person at or on ships to ensure and achieve the safe discharge and loading of equipment to/from ships.

·         To assist with the general housekeeping/cleaning of Company equipment and work areas.

·         To assist with the general workload of the workshop.

·         To assist the maintenance teams as required in maintaining the Company’s equipment and vehicles in a good working order and condition in accordance with the Company’s procedures and policies.

·         Any other duties the management may from time to time deem necessary and reasonably require.

 

Who We’re Looking For:


The successful candidate will possess the following:

•     Full, clean Category B driving licence or an equivalent driving license from another country which is valid in Ireland

•     Fluency in English, both spoken and written

•     Good literacy and numerical skills

•     Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines

•     Proven ability to work within a team

  •   Ideally, the successful candidate will have previous ship repair experience.

 

Reporting To

Reports directly to the change hand and managers

 

Location

The primary place of work for this position will be at Cork dockyard, Cobh, Co. Cork. The Welder/General Operative will be required to work indoors and outdoors, both within the garage/maintenance area and outside the Cork terminals. The Metal Fabricator/Welder may be required to work at other locations from time to time as the Company may deem necessary and reasonably require.
